HOW TO TURN SELF-LOVE INTO A DAILY ROUTINE
Self-love is a whole lot more than soaking in a bubble bath, drowning in motivational videos, or writing down three things you like about yourself. We’re humans, it takes a lot more than that. The best way to attain the highest level of self-worth is to first understand how the world functions.
It means understanding that we live in a society where self-worth needs to be proved through external achievements and that we need to reach top-notch influential status to be anyone ‘important’. That sets a lot of pressure for women who come from simple families and don’t have the support or the confidence to pursue big goals and aspirations. While these goals are not impossible, they’re a lot more difficult to reach than those who grew up with the right foundations for success.
But there’s hope for us all if we only knew how to turn self-love into a habit and not something that comes and goes with circumstance. Here’s what you need to know:
Start by Waking Up Right
There are days where we wake up and we’re convinced it’s going to be a bad day. We woke up too late, tumbled out of bed, barely had time to get our makeup game on, and we’re out the door. We get into the car and we forget half the things we needed like our lunch and our coffee. Sound like you? It happens to the best of us.
It’s so crucial to wake up with a positive and loving mindset no matter how late you are or how unmotivated you feel to go to work. Every day, once waking up, bring a loving thought into your mind. This can be almost anything that embraces your love for others, and of course, love for yourself. It could be about how much you love your husband for supporting you, or how much you adore your best friend for giving you an infinite number of compliments at all times. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something you love, respect, and something you look forward to.
Starting your day with a positive mindset is everything.
Let Go of the Unrealistic
We’re all attached to our social media channels and feel an-almost- dying need to scroll across multiple stories. It’s no secret that our phones and technology have become a huge part of our lives, but it hasn’t always been for the better. Social media, especially visual platforms like Instagram tend to distort many realities and can really put us down. Following models or superstars with cute outfits that have their lives together can either motivate us or break us. It’s important to make the distinction by only following people that will empower you and push you to love yourself. The feminist model Clementine Desseaux once said, "I'm just me every day, with pimples and cellulite.” These are people you want to follow! Comparing our lives to others is the number one killer of happiness and it’s important we address it now. The grass is not greener on the other side, and if it seems like it, think about the grass being artificial. Many images and videos we scroll past on a daily basis are impossibly unrealistic and give off this impression that it should be the standard way of living. It’s crucial to get rid of this type of stimuli and remind ourselves that while life seems flawless on our phones, in reality, it’s full of beautiful chaos; and everyone has a story.
It’s important that each and every one of us builds a defense mechanism when it comes to dealing with adversity. When it comes to grief, for example, some people tend to be more extroverted and need to ‘let it out’ while others prefer to hang under the sheets and take it all in.
Knowing how we deal with or face challenges and building a more effective resilience plan is huge for self-love. The first step is accepting the reality and understanding that change is part of living. Once we’ve come to this conclusion, it’s important to take all the facts and be able to make a decision. Whatever the decision may be, do it wholeheartedly and with full intention so that there are no regrets. Last but not least, build positive beliefs about your abilities and surround yourself with stimuli that will confirm these beliefs.
Greta Rose Van Riel once said, “Don’t be afraid to start over. This time you’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting from experience.” Always trust in your ability and your past experiences to push you forward and empower your decisions.
No matter how big or small your daily challenges are, embrace them and use your personal resilience plan to push past it.
Self-love is sometimes tough to give since we have trouble knowing how to do it. Do we talk to ourselves in the mirror? Do we repeat affirmations in our heads? do you practice love languages? There’s no right answer here. What you do have to consider is that being self-aware of who you are and where your weaknesses lie can help target your affirmations.
If you know you’re not as confident as you want to be, write down the reasons why you should be confident and write it down every day. Focus on a few attributes that hold you back from truly loving yourself and start addressing them on paper. This can help you see the big picture and help you work on fixing them. Whether you have a short fuse, don’t have enough patience, have issues with your self-image, or don’t feel you’re social enough, take these attributes and turn them around by working on them. Every step of the way, you’ll feel more inspired, accomplished, and aware of your incredible milestones with gratitude.
The love we have toward ourselves can never be taken away, and it's perhaps the greatest thing we have. Once we realize this, we can start focusing more on loving ourselves through positive thoughts, empowering affirmations, and by building persistent resilience all for our self-care.
It all starts from the moment we wake up and ends with the moment we hit the pillow. Every single day is a new start, and another chance to become better versions of ourselves and evolve into our greatest potential.
